Wir können Autovia voll und ganz empfehlen. Sehr freundliche, unkomplizierte und schnelle Abwicklung. Wir hatten einen Fordkombi gebucht und bekamen einen nagelneuen BYD SUV als Mietwagen, das war spitze. 100% Weiterempfehlung!

If you are going to Italy be careful with this rental company
Recommendation if you are travelling to Italy, this happened in Cerdeña.
They didn’t allow me to rent the car because I had a Californian driver license, they left me without car, without my money and I had to spend double the amount of money to rent a car the same day. We were travelling with 2 babies, which made everything even more complicated. it was late and we got stuck at the airport for many hours. They didn’t help me at all, other companies allowed Californian license, which made everything kind of confusing… for me it is a clear fraudulent abusive act.
If you come from USA, please be careful with this company specially if you book it through other companies.

We were on time for pick up, at 8:30 p.m on June 5 at the Autovía Cagliari Aeroporto and met with the guy at the desk.
The person who registered had California Driving license which was not accepted at the desk which we understood. We had another member in our group with EU driver license (Spanish) however the counter said since this person didn’t make the booking we could not use that driver license, he then asked us to call a third party company( CarTrawler in London +442035828218)
To ask for an exemption. We call them up and they as to speak directly with the guy at the desk and they asked for an exception and they were ready to send an email update to add the Spanish driving license holder as the primary registration on the booking. However, the guy at the desk refused saying he could not accept an email and that a new booking had to be generated and this resulted in a lost of our existing booking which we made three months ago, all of this happened within 30 minutes of the pick up time. After this I call again CartTrawler to ask if they could do something to help us to save the booking so that we don’t loose our money. At this point CartTrawler told us it was 47 min after the. It was later than pick up time and that they could no save the booking and we would need to make a new one.
The guy at the desk could have accepted the email initially and given us a car under the Spanish driver license of course, we were very confused and upset specially with two little babies crying constantly because they were tired. We were stack there for three hours and after paying double the amount of money we were able to go home and we reached the at 12:30 a.m.

We understand your frustration; however, we must clarify that Italian law requires non-EU residents — including those with a U.S. driver’s license — to present an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with their national license in order to legally drive in Italy. This is a government regulation, not an internal policy, and is especially important when traveling with children, where safety and legal compliance are paramount.
We cannot risk providing a vehicle when legal driving requirements are not met, as this could result in fines for the driver and serious consequences for all parties involved.
If other companies allow rentals without verifying these documents, that does not change the legal requirement — it simply means you may still be driving illegally in Italy.
Should you wish us to further review your specific case, we would be happy to do so. Please contact us at customercare@autovia.it with your full name and reservation number.
